An article has been accepted for publication in Free Radical Biology and Medicine.

The article, entitled "Systemic oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of brain edema in rats with chronic liver failure," by Cristina Bosoi, has just been accepted for publication.

In this article, we demonstrate how systemic oxidative stress, with hyperammonemia, plays a role in the pathogenesis of brain edema in rats with bile-duct ligation (BDL, a model of chronic liver failure). We observed at the onset of the disease the presence of oxidative stress in the plasma of BDL rats, but not in the brain. We were able to treat rats with an antioxidant, Allopurinol, which decreased brain edema. An analysis of ROS and ammonia temporal resolution in the plasma of BDL rats suggests that systemic oxidative stress might be an important “first hit,” which, followed by increases in ammonia, leads to BE in chronic liver failure.

Three abstracts will be presented to CASL 2011.

Three abstracts are accepted for presentation at CASL (Canadian Association for Liver Disease) held at Vancouver, Canada, February 26th-March 1st 2011.

Two abstracts will be oral presentation; one by Cristina Bosoi (Impaired lactate metabolism, not brain ammonia and glutamine, contributes to the pathogenesis of brain edema in minimal hepatic encephalopathy) and one by Jimmy Huynh (Na-K-Cl cotransporter is implicated in the pathogenesis of brain edema in rats with bile duct ligation). Furthermore, Cristina will present a poster (Systemic oxidative stress followed by increases in ammonia and lactate is involved in the pathogenesis of brain edema in chronic liver failure).
